FMHI REU

Florida Mental Health Research Institute (FMHI)
Behavioral health disorders, i.e., mental and addictive disorders, are among the leading causes of disability world wide.   FMHI conducts research on behavioral and social issues related to mental health and substance abuse across all ages of the lifespan:  early childhood through older adults.  Because behavioral health services are provided in a variety of systems, e.g., mental health, substance abuse, criminal justice, social welfare, and education, our research is multidisciplinary.  FMHI sponsors a Research Experience for Undergraduates for students interested in building their research skills within the context of mental health and substance abuse disorders.  While geared toward behavioral health issues, the research methodologies will apply to a wide range of social science disciplines.  The REU is designed to provide an intensive research experience for students interested in conducting research to help them prepare for graduate school, medical school, and/or their Senior Thesis.

The REU will increase the research competence of students through individually mentored research projects, training in research ethics, and a seminar series. Students will enroll concurrently in two courses:  MHS 4931:  Behavioral Health:  Research Experience for Undergraduates (3 hours) and MHS 4906:  REU Mentorship (2 hours)

An REU Award, accompanied by a $500 scholarship, will be presented to the student whose paper is judged to be outstanding.  Students who have papers selected for presentation at a regional or national conference will receive financial support their travel expenses.  In addition, students may be selected to receive a scholarship for the fall, 2005 and/or spring, 2006 semester to continue their research with their faculty mentor.
